The “Catholic” League

Boy, this story about Amanda Marcotte resigning is really making me mad!  I decided to go onto and do a little investigating into the Catholic League, which claims to be a civil rights group.  Right.

Within is a section for each non-profit.  You can also look up their latest tax forms that tell about how much money they received from the public and how much money they spend in other areas.  You can go look it up if you want specific details (I’ll give close estimates), but that ‘organization’ only pulled in $2.5 million dollars in 2005 (the last tax form that is up on the net).  Doesn’t sound like very much for someone like Bill Donahue to be acting like he owns the world…

Anyway, he pays himself a little over $330,000, while the vice president gets over $160,000.  They also spent over $250,000 on legal fees.  So out of a budget of $2.5 million, they spent 30% of their money on two people and some lawyers.  Boy, this sounds like a good deal to me.  It really makes me want to start a non-profit of my own.  It also seems very suspicious that they spent almost half a million on publication material and about that much on shipping!  I wonder who their printer is? I also found it a bit bizarre that they own a large number of stock in UPS…I’ll do a bit more digging on that aspect of their finances later.

So how representative is the Catholic League and in particular, what kind of person is Bill Donahue?

Here are a few quotes and information on the president of the Catholic League:

He has referred to the "gay death style," remarked, "God forbid we’d run out of little gay kids," claimed that Senator John Kerry "never found an abortion he couldn’t justify," and claimed that "Hollywood is controlled by secular Jews who hate Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular … Hollywood likes anal sex."

"The fact of the matter is the media elite have an aversion to religion. Some of them even have a phobia and some of them are obviously anti-religion. … They want Tom, Dick, and Harry to get married. They want "under God" out of the pledge of allegiance. They don’t want anybody to see The Passion of the Christ. It’s all tied together." [MSNBC, Scarborough Country, 2/24/04]

Well, I do want people to see the Passion of Christ–I thought it was an excellent movie and very moving!  Sorry Bill–the story of Jesus doesn’t just belong to you…

"Name for me a book publishing company in this country, particularly in New York, which would allow you to publish a book which would tell the truth about the gay death style. There are certain things that the left won’t tolerate. They are censorial at heart. Indeed, the signature appetite of the left has always been power. Now, they are running up against the American people." [MSNBC, Scarborough Country, 2/27/04]

"Well, no. I’m saying if a Catholic votes for Kerry because they support him on abortion rights that is to cooperate in evil." [MSNBC, Hardball, 10/21/04]

(Why wasn’t his little non-profit shut down then and there by the IRS for getting involved in campaigns?)

"We’ve already won. Who really cares what Hollywood thinks? All these hacks come out there. Hollywood is controlled by secular Jews who hate Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular. It’s not a secret, okay? And I’m not afraid to say it. … Hollywood likes anal sex. They like to see the public square without nativity scenes. I like families. I like children. They like abortions. I believe in traditional values and restraint. They believe in libertinism. We have nothing in common. But you know what? The culture war has been ongoing for a long time. Their side has lost." [MSNBC, Scarborough Country, 12/8/04]

Nice guy, huh?  It is amazing that political leaders (?) on the left bow down to people like Bill Donahue, who pretends to speak for all Catholics.

One Response to The “Catholic” League

On one hand you have people that want to constitutionally marginalize gay people and on the other you have some people who refuse to take a group of people\’s fairy tales seriously.  Who are the bad guys?
