The man who was beaten with a pipe for being gay died yesterday at a hospital in Detroit. They need to find who did this and hang them high (if you ask me). It is pretty sad when someone has to attack an elderly person for whatever reason. And it is just as sad that someone has to feel they need to beat the crap out of someone because they are gay. We can thank the hate-filled environment that is created by the legislature, and the majority who vote for these anti-gay laws. Most of all, we can thank the religious right for creating an atmosphere where this occurs.
This is what Matt Foreman (from the National Gay and Lesbian Taskforce) had to say:
The hatred and loathing that led to the vicious murder of Andrew Anthos only because he was gay is not innate.
Instead it is being taught every day by leaders of the so-called Christian right and their political allies who use their vast resources, media networks and affiliated pulpits to blame lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people for all the ills of society. They disguise their bigotry as ‘deeply-held religious beliefs.’ They cloak themselves in family values.
It is appalling hypocrisy for these forces to pretend that their venomous words and organizing have no connection to the plague of hate violence against gay people, including the murder of Mr. Anthos.
I couldn’t have said it better myself.
