Ann Arbor Public School System

I just blogged a bit about the fact that partner benefits will no longer be allowed in the AA school district.  I just sent off an email (webmaster@aaps.k12.mi.us) to complain about this.  I know that the responsibility for this discrimination really sits with the people of Michigan, but that doesn’t mean I can’t complain about it!

I also just noticed the non-discrimination policy of the school system:

Non-Discrimination Policy of the Ann Arbor Public Schools

No person shall be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination in any educational program or activity available in any school on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, creed, political belief, age, national origin, linguistic and language differences, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, height, weight, marital or familial status, or disability.

But now that they are denying benefits and are subjecting gays and lesbians to discrimination, it is high time that the Ann Arbor School District show their discriminatory policies and strike ‘sexual orientation’ from their non-discrimination policy.  After all, it would only be the right thing to do.

Here is my email:

To whom it may concern,

I just woke this morning to the news that the Ann Arbor Public School district will no longer be giving benefits to same-sex partners.  How sad that the district would cave in to the likes of Gary Glenn and his nazi-like group, American Family Association. I know that the state voted against same-sex marriage, but Ann Arbor is the one shining light in Michigan and you have just helped it move just that bit more backwards.

And really, what for? There are only 15 people who are receiving benefits.

Anyway, I see that your district still has ‘sexual orientation’ on your Non-Discrimination Policy.  Now that you are actively discriminating against gays and lesbians, someone should have that stricken from your policy.  Your policy states:

No person shall be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination in any educational program or activity available in any school…

But now that you are denying benefits, then it is time that you show your discriminatory policies against gays and lesbians.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kevin Kaatz

One Response to Ann Arbor Public School System

  1. Charles says:

Hi. I enjoyed seeing your space. I took my second Rhine cruise last April. It was a great experience. The German towns are beautiful and I was surprised to see so many swans. For the most part, the people spoke both German and English which was nice since I do not speak any German. We also visited Amsterdam which is an experience in itself! Best wishes to you and thanks for sharing your space to the world.
