Doug and I have decided to take the plunge and start looking for a house to buy. The market is definitely a buyer’s market and we figure it probably won’t be this good forever. We just sent in all the paperwork to get pre-approval and it sounds like that went through. We met one real estate agent who is a friend of a friend of a friend. We’ll be meeting two more on Saturday and then deciding.
I’m pretty excited about it. Our place in Sydney is fantastic, but it is in an apartment building (right in the city) and it has all these rules and regulations about everything, including pets. We had Zak in there even though there was a no pet policy. I figure if we paid for that apartment, then what we do in it is none of anyone else’s business. Of course, it doesn’t work out quite like that. But I refuse to buy a condo here and have to deal with home owner’s fees and those dreaded home owner’s associations (and I mean the people who are on those associations). We’ll find a house with the biggest yard we can afford. I want a garden–as big as I can get. Doug asked me the other day what trees we should plant and we are definitely going to get a lemon and lime tree and maybe some dwarf fruit trees.
And then there is the rest of the garden. One of these years we will install solar panels. Eventually I want to grow most of our own food and not use the electrical grid for power. We’ll see–but that is the goal!
