I just received my usual email from the Family Research Council and this time it is a video of Tony Perkins talking about same sex marriage and trying to convince Californians to change our state Constitution (he couldn’t get it done at a national level so now he is trying for the state level). His argument is the usual talk about non-elected judges and judicial activism and the destruction of marriage. Of course, he fails to mention that elected officials here have asked that gay marriage be made legal twice in the last two years. But our governor vetoed it and said it should be left to judges to decide (despite that Arnold sent a lawyer to the State Supreme Court arguing against same-sex marriage).
I found it highly funny that Perkins would pick a quote from Abraham Lincoln (a government of the people, by the people, for the people). I wonder if Abraham Lincoln wrote these words while he was sleeping in the same bed with Joshua Speed or with his bodyguard David Derickson? And I find it highly disgusting that Tony Perkins would dare quote this particular president, considering his recent past with the KKK and that now infamous mailing list…
I also opened up some of the junk he is trying to get people to read to ‘better understand’ what the issues are. I find it very interesting that in their "2008 Stand For Marriage–Bulletin Insert" they claim that:
Every civilization in history is built upon the institution of marriage. The welfare of children, the propagation of the faith, the wellbeing of society, and the orderliness of civilization are all dependent upon the stability of marriage according to the divine pattern.
The propagation of the faith??? What? Clearly these people haven’t bothered to read Paul–you know–the Paul who wrote most of the New Testament that we have today. Paul says that he wishes that people wouldn’t get married, like himself. He was the biggest ‘propagator’ of the message of Christ. Oh well. Who ever said these people from the Family Research Council ever read their Bible.
That brochure also gives the definition of marriage according to Christ (at least that is what this brochure wants you to think):
Marriage According to Jesus
“Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate." Matthew 19:4-6
The reason Christ says this is because of a question about divorce:
Matt. 19:3 Some Pharisees came to him, and to test him they asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause?"
But do you see Mr Perkins advocating for taking away the rights of divorced people? No–that would take away too much of his money. Besides, it is much more PC to attack gay people than it is divorced people (even though God hates divorce).
Here are the actions Perkins and his group wants people to take:
Action Step 1: PRAY: We need to pray for God’s mercy on a nation that is sliding toward Sodom (See Genesis 18; 2 Chronicles 7:14)
Action Step 2: PRACTICE: We need to practice biblical principles for healthy marriage as a positive witness (See Ephesians 5:22-33)
Action Step 3: PARTICIPATE: We need to participate in our “government of the people, by the people, and for the people” as Abraham Lincoln described it (See Exodus 18:21; Matthew 5:13-16; 22:21; Romans 13:1-7).
Take a look at what 2 Chronicles 7:14 states (and notice it has nothing to do with a slide ‘towards Sodom’):
7:12 Then the LORD appeared to Solomon in the night and said to him: "I have heard your prayer, and have chosen this place for myself as a house of sacrifice.7:13 When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command the locust to devour the land, or send pestilence among my people,7:14 if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
And let’s look at the biblical principles for a health marriage:
5:22 Wives, be subject to your husbands as you are to the Lord.5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife just as Christ is the head of the church, the body of which he is the Savior.5:24 Just as the church is subject to Christ, so also wives ought to be, in everything, to their husbands.5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,5:26 in order to make her holy by cleansing her with the washing of water by the word,5:27 so as to present the church to himself in splendor, without a spot or wrinkle or anything of the kind–yes, so that she may be holy and without blemish.5:28 In the same way, husbands should love their wives as they do their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.5:29 For no one ever hates his own body, but he nourishes and tenderly cares for it, just as Christ does for the church,5:30 because we are members of his body.5:31 "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh."5:32 This is a great mystery, and I am applying it to Christ and the church.5:33 Each of you, however, should love his wife as himself, and a wife should respect her husband.
That is all well and good, but why didn’t Tony Perkins list another attribute of a healthy family:
6:5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, in singleness of heart, as you obey Christ;6:6 not only while being watched, and in order to please them, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart.6:7 Render service with enthusiasm, as to the Lord and not to men and women,6:8 knowing that whatever good we do, we will receive the same again from the Lord, whether we are slaves or free.6:9 And, masters, do the same to them. Stop threatening them, for you know that both of you have the same Master in heaven, and with him there is no partiality.
Why is it that these people who like to use the Bible in defining a healthy marriage and family leave this quote out? Is it that no one believes that slaves and masters are a good thing now and that it isn’t applicable to modern day society? Isn’t this all God’s Word?
And finally–let’s look at the Scriptures that are listed to get people to participate:
Exodus 18:21: 18:21 You should also look for able men among all the people, men who fear God, are trustworthy, and hate dishonest gain; set such men over them as officers over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.18:22 Let them sit as judges for the people at all times; let them bring every important case to you, but decide every minor case themselves. So it will be easier for you, and they will bear the burden with you.
This passage is referring to religious judges to preside over Jewish law. Here we see a good example of the threat of a theocracy replacing a democracy.
5:13 "You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot.5:14 "You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid.5:15 No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house.5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.
This has nothing to do with voting on issues.
Matt 22:21: 22:16 So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality.22:17 Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?"22:18 But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, "Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites?22:19 Show me the coin used for the tax." And they brought him a denarius. 22:20 Then he said to them, "Whose head is this, and whose title?"22:21 They answered, "The emperor’s." Then he said to them, "Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s."
So give to God what is God’s. Is marriage, which is only a marriage if the State says so, the emperor’s or God’s? Anyway, those are the scriptures they list to get people to vote on this issue. Clearly they are expecting people not to open up their Bible to read what they are pointing them to, because if they did, they would have the same reaction that I did: what are they talking about?
Finally, they list the final Action:
Action Step 4: PROCLAIM: We need to proclaim the promise found in 1 Corinthians 6:9b-11: “Do not be deceived: no sexually immoral people, idolaters, adulterers, male prostitutes, homosexuals, thieves, greedy people, drunkards, revilers, or swindlers will inherit God’s kingdom. Some of you were like this. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” That is Good News!
I had to laugh at this one. We are, after all, talking mostly about Republicans–no adulterers, to thieves, no greedy people (that alone takes Tony Perkins right out of any plan he has to go on to heaven)–to drunks, and especially no swindlers. Do they read what they write? So they take out ‘homosexual’ (if that word really means that) and try and change both the state and federal Constitutions, but why don’t they try and stop these other groups or work towards getting these other groups blocked from equal rights in the Constitution? Let’s see them work to limit the rights of adulterers or drunks. There wouldn’t be a Republican party if they took out just those two groups (and yes, I know there are Democrats that are adulterers and drunks–but you don’t see very many Democrats trying to change the Constitution).
Pick and choose. Pick and choose. I say when they live up to all these rules and regulations, then maybe they can start to force their religious beliefs on the rest of us.
