Last Easter Doug and I wandered down to Dolores Park (just two blocks from our Castro apartment) to see what was happening on Easter. It turns out that quite a bit was happening, including something called the Hunky Jesus Contest. We didn’t stay to watch it (the other entertainment put on by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence was lasting longer than we wanted to sit).
Peter LaBarbera is having a fit about it. Here is a little of what he has to say (the bolding is his):
Here is pure evil of the sort that can only be found in America’s “queer” Mecca: you just have to see it to believe it. Originally, I was not going to post this satanic Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence video of their 2008 “Hunky Jesus” contest — held on Easter Sunday in San Francisco, of course — because it is so offensive and blasphemous. But people need to see this homosexual hate in action to understand what we’re up against and what results from celebrating deviance.
Which begs the question: what other social movement in our culture mocks and attacks Christianity like the homosexualists? Even radical pro-abortion feminists (”Keep your rosaries off my ovaries”) seem downright respectful toward the faith when compared to the twisted “Sisters” and their virulent anti-God, anti-Christian rhetoric.
We know what the response of many on the Left will be: it you don’t like “Hunky Jesus,” then don’t go to the contest and don’t watch the YouTube! But the sheer existence of the Sisters — and the fact that they’ve prospered so in the “gayest” city in the USA — is more evidence of who the real haters are in this debate.
And here is what his good female buddy and caped anti-gay crusader Alllyson Smith has to say:
Here’s how the San Francisco twisted Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence celebrated Easter Sunday. Why do they feel such a need to denigrate Jesus and Christianity? Could it perhaps be because they know in their hearts that homosexuality is not an innate identity but a grievous sin that cries out to Heaven for vengeance, and therefore they must sear their consciences against the very Savior who could rescue them from it?
So, Peter thinks we are evil, offensive, blasphemous, and that it is hate to have a Hunky Jesus Contest. He and Allyson Smith ask the same question–what other group ‘mocks’ the church and why are they doing this? It doesn’t take a two year old to answer this question. What other group out there constantly attacks and denigrates gays and lesbians than the Christian church (and not all of it, by the way)? Do they really expect gays and lesbians to accept what a religion believes and forces on other people? My answer to that is a straight NO. Let’s look at what the Christian church has to say about gays and lesbians, and maybe it will become more clear why some react the way they do by turning hate and discrimination into something good (like the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence):
Archbishop Angelo Amato, secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, recently said this:
He listed these as abortion clinics, which he called "slaughterhouses of human beings", euthanasia, and "parliaments of so-called civilized nations where laws contrary to the nature of the human being are being promulgated, such as the approval of marriage between people of the same sex …"
So this Archbishop says that we are against the laws of nature and we are evil. How would Christians feel if someone said that they were against the laws of nature and were evil? They wouldn’t be very happy about it, would they???
Every human being is called to receive a gift of divine sonship, to become a child of God by grace. However, to receive this gift, we must reject sin, including homosexual behavior—that is, acts intended to arouse or stimulate a sexual response regarding a person of the same sex. The Catholic Church teaches that such acts are always violations of divine and natural law.
People have a basic, ethical intuition that certain behaviors are wrong because they are unnatural. We perceive intuitively that the natural sex partner of a human is another human, not an animal.
The same reasoning applies to the case of homosexual behavior. The natural sex partner for a man is a woman, and the natural sex partner for a woman is a man. Thus, people have the corresponding intuition concerning homosexuality that they do about bestiality—that it is wrong because it is unnatural.
Natural law reasoning is the basis for almost all standard moral intuitions. For example, it is the dignity and value that each human being naturally possesses that makes the needless destruction of human life or infliction of physical and emotional pain immoral. This gives rise to a host of specific moral principles, such as the unacceptability of murder, kidnapping, mutilation, physical and emotional abuse, and so forth.
And I won’t even get into what some Protestant groups have to say about gays and lesbians…
Again, gays and lesbians are in ‘violation of the divine and natural law’ and that we are unnatural. So maybe Peter LaBarbera and Allyson Smith can rethink their stupid question. They should be asking why gays and lesbians are so tolerant of a group that despises them and calls them unnatural and evil and, if you are Sally Kerns or her supporters, they are worse than terrorists. They should be asking gays and lesbians even care at all what Christians have to say since, after all, we supposedly live in a country where freedom of religion is paramount. Gays and lesbians are persecuted constantly by people like Peter LaBarbera and Allyson Smith and all the other anti-gay activists just because they believe a certain religion. And just because they believe they think they can and should force others to live under their beliefs. This should be a warning to all people living in this country. First it is the gay people and if they get their way (or as Sally Kerns says, if the contest is to be won) then they will start attacking other groups of people who believe something different.
So long live the Hunky Jesus contest on Easter Day. Long live the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence who have turned hate and discrimination into a force for the good.
p.s. I wanted to laugh out loud when Peter LaBarbera wondered whether he should show the Hunky Jesus video–my god, this is the same person who wallows in everything gay and lesbian and loves taking video and pictures of the Folsum Street Fair and putting them up on his hatesite. And again, what is up with the ‘Amen’ talk by Peter LaBarbera??? I think he has seen the light and realizes that he can make more money by pretending to be religious…
