I received two emails today. One is from Tony Perkins and his pals at the Family Research Center. He wants $600,000 so that his group can ‘save’ marriage. Tony Perkins is in Washington D.C. The last time I checked the people who have donated money to the Prop. 8 campaign, I didn’t see the Family Research Council listed as a donor. Hmm.
Anyway, Tony Perkins circulates the old lies about same sex marriage:
I want you to hear something a California pastor said to me recently:
"If we lose, we go to jail."
It’s just that simple, says Pastor Jim Garlow-if marriage loses in California, religious liberties everywhere will be next.
Family Research Council has been pouring resources into a national campaign to defend marriage and religious freedom, and . . .
I’m writing today to ask you again to stand with us. We still must raise $600,000 before the close of our fiscal year on September 30.
I know many Americans are feeling the pinch of a tight economy. As you prayerfully consider a gift, rest assured that FRC carefully stewards every dollar you give to the defense of marriage, religious freedom, parental rights, and human life.
The stakes are enormous. We face a national menace to religious liberty:
- In Boston, a Christian adoption agency was shut down for refusing to place orphans with homosexual couples.
- In New Mexico, a Christian-owned studio was fined more than $6,000 for refusing to photograph a lesbian commitment ceremony.
- In San Francisco, the city council officially condemned Christian opposition to homosexual adoption as hateful and discriminatory rhetoric.
By God’s grace and with your help, we can win this fight.
FRC has been protecting marriage during its 25-year history, and we’ve been voicing your values ever since activist judges in Massachusetts and California legalized counterfeit marriage and triggered a national debate.
Your prayers and generosity are enabling FRC to use our national platform to make the forceful case for traditional marriage in the media, in the churches, and at the grassroots.
In less than two months, voters in California, Florida, and Arizona will have the chance to place marriage out of the reach of activists and liberals.
Twenty-six states already have constitutional protections for marriage.
We pray that California, Florida, and Arizona will be added to that list once voters learn the truth about the lies the Left uses to justify counterfeit marriage.
The fight for marriage in the states is our first priority.
But we can’t take our eye off Washington, D.C. politicians. Your support is vital as we stand up to liberals who want to criminalize your religious speech . . . threaten the religious liberties of employers . . . silence conservative and Christian broadcasting . . . raise taxes . . . and impose taxpayer funding of abortion and embryonic stem cell research.
Thank you for sacrificially giving whatever you can at this critical moment for faith, family, and freedom in America.
Notice the lies. If we lose, we go to jail. What a joke and what a way to use religion to scare people. God hates lies, Tony, in case you haven’t read your Bible lately! And why doesn’t God, with his grace, just act? Now I am not making fun of God. I am making fun of the fact that Tony believes that God needs help to do something–especially money. I also find it funny that Tony Perkins seems to believe (like a few others) that freedom of speech will be taken away. This is nothing but a BALD FACE LIE. I put it into capitals in case those who think this will be the case will see that it is a lie.
And not to be outdone, (and they were probably working together on this one), the American Family Association (or the Don Wildmon Family Association as it should really be called) sent me an email today as well. Here it is (and I’ve taken out the links to their donation site):
Those fighting against homosexual marriage in California, Florida and Arizona need your help!
September 23, 2008
The institution of marriage is under attack.
Activist judges continue to chip away at the institution of marriage against the will of the people.
This is why American Family Association is proud to announce our support for Stand for Marriage. Stand for Marriage is mounting a campaign over the next 40 days to educate voters across the country about issues that threaten to destroy traditional marriage. Your gift will be used to make sure voters understand what is at stake this year. Every penny given will go to Stand for Marriage. None of it will be retained by AFA.
Click here to make a secure online contribution to Stand for Marriage.
The stakes are high. Stand for Marriage is borne of the idea that no one organization or person can bear the burden of this fight alone. We must all stand together to support our friends in California, Florida and Arizona as they fight their local battle to preserve marriage. Each state will vote to put the one man, one woman concept of marriage into their state constitution.
Will you stand with us on the front lines to ensure this battle is won?
The pro-homosexual marriage groups are spending millions to destroy marriage ($20,000,000 in California alone). The forces aligned against us are determined and strong. The homosexual groups can count on friendly coverage from the media and fat rchecks from big Hollywood donors. This is why is helping Stand for Marriage raise an army of support to win key battles for marriage in the next 40 days.
AFA stands firmly behind Stand for Marriage and we hope you will too. The stakes are too high for us not to act. Please give what you can to support Stand for Marriage today.
Donald E. Wildmon,
Founder and Chairman
American Family Association
And if you go to their Stand For Marriage website, you get to see Tony Perkins. So Don Wildmon says that the AFA won’t retain any of this money, but notice that Tony Perkins hasn’t said the same, and the money that people donate to this organization goes directly to the Family Research Council. This Stand For Marriage website was created on May 23 and has a contact address of:
Cureton, Kenyn firstname.lastname@example.org
Soul of America
1711 Hollow Oak
Lebanon, Tennessee 37087
Kenyn Cureton is the Vice President of Church Ministries for the Family Research Council. You have to wonder what the Family Research Council is going to do with all this money. The letter from Tony Perkins doesn’t mention the website Stand for Marriage. But he is asking for $600,000 to be sent to the FRC. Sounds like he is double-dipping, if you ask my humble opinion…
