President Obama–What a Change!

Just after Obama was elected our next President, I had written that although gays and lesbians in California probably lost at a local level, we almost certainly won on a federal level.  Here is a summary of the statement he put out on glbt rights:

It calls for passage of the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Act; a gender-inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act; repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell; repeal of the federal Defense of Marriage Act; opposition to any attempt to reintroduce an amendment to the Constitution to ban same-sex marriage, support for inclusive adoption rights; and an expanded war on HIV/AIDS.

“Obama also believes we need to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and enact legislation that would ensure that the 1,100+ federal legal rights and benefits currently provided on the basis of marital status are extended to same-sex couples in civil unions and other legally-recognized unions. These rights and benefits include the right to assist a loved one in times of emergency, the right to equal health insurance and other employment benefits, and property rights.”

Talk about change!

    <i>"

employment benefits, and property rights.”</i>Even before Madelene and I got married, we have all of these rights that were given to us under the Bush administration—BUT—–through power of attorney and beneficiary papers.  This is not a huge change, but it\’s a step in the right direction.  There are so many ways to get your rights through other means.  Let them ban whatever they want, you still have your rights as a human. I hope things will get better there in CA for you two.

Actually Deb, everyone had THOSE rights via Power of Attorney, Wills, and so on long BEFORE the Bush Administration came along. The problem has been that FAMILY members have successfully challenged these documents in Court battles and will continue to do so as long as same-sex marriage goes unrecognized.
