Spring is Here

I was outside all day today working in the yard.  We’ve been putting down a brick walkway in the front yard around the garden beds.  It isn’t permanent since we’re not sure how exactly we want things.  Today I finally got in the pole green beans and yesterday I put in two heirloom tomatoes and a cherry tomato.  Something chewed off one of my Steak Sandwich tomatoes last night.  Darn.  And something has been eating my pepper plants.  It is probably slugs, which I have found around the garden.  I also planted about 7 dozen flower seeds to put in various places.

Finally, I picked our first beets.  They’ve been growing since October and are just now really taking off.  I also pulled one of the onions.  They have large, thick tops but no rounded parts.  I know I picked this one early, but I wanted an onion to stir fry the beet tops with (I’m baking the beets by themselves).  I hope the onions develop.  Right now they look like leeks…Here is a pic of the beets and the one onion:

It was 80 degrees here today–which is just perfect, especially considering we have two friends from the Philippines arriving tonight for a couple of days.  It is supposed to be very nice weather-wise.  They are staying in San Francisco and tomorrow we are going up to take them to Sonoma Valley for some wine tasting/sightseeing and on Sunday we’ll go out to brunch with them and our good friend Harvey, who is also from the Philippines.  It should be a good weekend.  Then the rest of April will be spent building our various fences and planting more things in the yard.

Hey Cass! 44 sounds like a warm spring day! Sorry to hear about the snow. My parents live in Michigan and they just commented on the winter as well.
