I am rather non plused with this move from Obama. Like all of his other moves so far concerning gay rights he has made moves that do not really move the bar. All the hospitals here and in most of the country have had in place for years a little thing called a medical power of attorney that allows partners visitation and say in their partners medical treatment. Speaking from my own experience my partner has always had visitation rights even in ICU because my hospital which by the way is a Baptist hospital offers these rights and power of attorneys to all their patients. If one checks they will find that most hospitals have this. He also has a say in my medical treatment. The problem arises because not just gay couples but str8 couples as well do not think about things that could happen in the future when they decide to become a couple. Many str8 couples have faced the same situation as gay couples have when it comes to visitation rights or making medical decisions for their partners. The reason I am non plused with his announcement is because just as his other decisions it really does not amount to a hill of beans. All of his moves have come with caveats. Remember when he recognize the gays in federal employement. Sure he recognized their right to be gay and to be free from employment discrimination but, their partners still do not have access to their health care. This last announcement only deals with visitation, no mention of the right to make medical decisions for their partner and it only applies to hospitals that receive medicare and medicaid. When he actually does decide to do something to end DADT and DOMA then he will have my attention. Just think what the military would look like had Harry Truman done as Obama has. At least Harry Truman said politics and party be damned and he issued a executive order that ended segregation in the military. Dont get to exicted by these little meaninless moves he does for publicity. It is nothing more than the old story of how hush puppies came into being. In the south the kitchens were mostly outside the main house and when the maids would take the meals to the main house they had little corn bread fritters they would toss to the dogs and say hush puppie to keep them from jumping up to get the real food. The way I see it this is just one more little fritter to keep us quiet and not pushing him to do what he promised to to.

Small steps forward with Obama, or steps backwards with Repubtarts, Think I will take the first.

  3. Awesome blog! Do you have any helpful hints for aspiring writers?
I’m planning to start my own website soon but I’m a little lost
on everything. Would you advise starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid
option? There are so many choices out there that I’m totally overwhelmed .. Any suggestions? Cheers!
